Thirty years ago, Katja Sommer fled the remote Danish island of Ludvig with a new name and a secret she intended to keep forever.
Now she is Liz Harper, a celebrated London artist. When she inherits Tide House, the childhood home she abandoned after a Midsummer celebration ended in blood, she has no intention of going back.
Then a man’s bone is found buried in the garden.
Forced to return to an island that has not forgotten her, Liz is met by a suspicious detective, hostile locals and anonymous notes from someone who knows exactly what happened that summer. To discover whose bone has surfaced, she must unlock memories she has spent decades burying.
For Liz, memories come in colour. An old mixtape from 1985 becomes her way back, each song revealing another fragment of the summer when she and her folkloric mother ran a secret shelter for abused women above the treacherous waters known as the Bone Tide.
But Liz’s daughter Penny is searching too. And the closer they both get to the truth, the more Liz begins to fear that the darkest secret on Ludvig is not the one she brought back with her.
